Break-even units = fixed costs ÷ (price − variable cost); target units = (fixed costs + target profit) ÷ (price − variable cost)
The model assumes contribution margin from each unit covers fixed costs and then profit. Required volume is rounded up to a whole unit so the result does not remain below break-even or the target.
Fixed costs of 5,000 with a selling price of 50
- • Fixed costs for the period: 5,000
- • Selling price per unit: 50; variable cost per unit: 30
- • Target profit: 2,000; forecast unit sales: 400
- 1. Contribution margin per unit = 50 − 30 = 20
- 2. Contribution margin ratio = 20 ÷ 50 × 100 = 40%
- 3. Break-even units = 5,000 ÷ 20 = 250 units
- 4. Break-even sales revenue = 5,000 ÷ 0.40 = 12,500
- 5. Target units = (5,000 + 2,000) ÷ 20 = 350 units
- 6. Forecast profit at 400 units = 400 × 50 − (5,000 + 400 × 30) = 3,000
The minimum break-even volume is 250 units and break-even sales revenue is 12,500. A target profit of 2,000 requires 350 units. At 400 units, forecast operating profit is 3,000 and the margin of safety is 37.5%.
How to read the result
- A 40% contribution margin ratio means 0.40 of each revenue unit is available to cover fixed costs and profit.
- A forecast of 400 units is 150 units above break-even; under this simple model, volume could fall 37.5% before entering a loss.
- A higher target profit or fixed cost increases required volume, while a higher price or lower variable cost increases contribution margin and reduces required volume.
Conditions that change the result
- The model assumes constant price and variable cost across the sales range and assumes all produced units are sold.
- It does not automatically model product mix, tiered discounts, capacity limits, spoilage, taxes, financing costs, or cash-flow timing.
- If labor, equipment, or supplier pricing changes at certain volume thresholds, recalculate each relevant operating range.
Common input mistakes
- Do not mix monthly fixed costs with an annual target profit or sales forecast.
- Do not enter total variable costs for the period in the per-unit field.
- Keep price and cost consistently tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive.
- Do not use a simple average of prices and costs for a multi-product business with different sales volumes.

Q. Which costs belong in fixed costs?
Include costs that remain for the analysis period regardless of sales volume, such as rent, fixed salaries, insurance, subscriptions, and depreciation. Allocate quarterly or annual costs to the chosen period and separate costs that rise with volume.
Q. What belongs in variable cost per unit?
Include costs that rise when one more unit is sold, such as materials, packaging, marketplace fees, payment fees, and per-unit delivery. If a selling fee is a percentage of revenue, convert it to a per-unit amount using the current price.
Q. Why are required units rounded up?
If the formula produces 250.2 units, selling 250 whole units does not fully cover fixed costs. Under a whole-unit assumption, 251 is the minimum volume that avoids a loss. The primary revenue uses this minimum whole-unit volume, while the continuous-volume formula is labeled as theoretical revenue.
Q. Can I use this for a business with several products?
A single-product formula is not exact when products have different prices and margins. If the sales mix is stable, calculate a weighted-average contribution margin separately, or analyze each product on its own.
Q. What does a negative margin of safety mean?
Forecast volume is below break-even. Compare realistic options such as raising price, reducing variable cost, adjusting fixed cost, or increasing sales volume.
Q. Does the calculation include sales tax or income tax?
No tax is added automatically. Use a consistent tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive basis for price and costs, and review income or corporate tax separately because it is generally calculated after operating profit.
