For coffee runs, chores, presentation order, or party penalties, enter matching lists of people and outcomes. Select Start, then have each participant trace their own route and reveal the assignments one at a time.
What is Random Ladder Game?
The Random Ladder Game creates a one-to-one random assignment between 2 to 12 participants and an equal number of outcome positions, then displays that assignment as a ladder that can be traced. Only the vertical tracks are visible while editing, so the routes cannot be read early; selecting Start fixes both the assignments and the horizontal rungs.
How to Use
- 1 Set the player count from 2 to 12, or choose the coffee run, presentation order, or chores preset.
- 2 Enter participant names above the ladder and the same number of outcomes below it. You may repeat an outcome in multiple fields.
- 3 Select Start to lock the fields and reveal a new ladder whose vertical tracks are all connected.
- 4 Select Trace path for a participant to follow the animated route and reveal one result, or choose Reveal all.
- 5 Choose Edit to change the entries, or Shuffle again to create a new assignment with the current entries. You can copy the full list after every result is revealed.
How the random assignment becomes a real ladder path

Each participant has an equal chance of receiving one position from the shuffled, non-repeating set. Text that appears once has a chance of 1 divided by the player count; repeating the text across several fields combines the chances of those positions.
A four-person coffee run

Each participant has a 25% chance of buying coffee and a 75% chance of receiving a free pass; exactly one person is connected to Buy coffee in one game.
How to read the result
- Selecting Start fixes the shuffled permutation and the ladder together, and every traced destination exactly matches its stored outcome position.
- The number of rungs or a visually complicated route does not raise or lower the odds. Probability depends on how many of the outcome fields contain the same result.
- The order in which paths are revealed has no effect, and Reveal all displays the same fixed assignment at once.
Conditions that change the result
- Shuffle again creates a new permutation and a new ladder, so the assignments may change even when the names and outcomes stay the same.
- Returning to Edit and changing a name, outcome, or player count discards the previous game and its reveal progress.
- Browser randomness makes each game difficult to predict, but the tool does not provide the audit records or drawing proof required for regulated prizes or official selection.
Common input mistakes
- A blank participant or outcome field is replaced with its numbered default when the game starts, so enter the intended text before sharing results.
- Duplicate participant names make it difficult to identify who owns each route; use distinct names or numbered labels.
- Shuffle again does not preserve the current assignment. Reveal and copy the full result first if you need to keep it.

- ● At the start of a game, outcome positions are shuffled with the Fisher-Yates method so each participant receives one distinct position.
- ● Every horizontal rung performs a real swap between two adjacent tracks. There are no display-only cancellation rungs, and the generated routes are checked immediately against the stored assignment.
- ● The first connection phase uses non-overlapping even and odd rung sets so every adjacent boundary and every vertical track is connected at least once. Further non-conflicting adjacent swaps complete the requested assignment.
- ● Rungs that touch each other are never placed on the same row. On mobile, ladders of up to four players fit the viewport; ladders of five or more scroll inside the game area and follow the active path automatically.
FAQ
Q. Why are the horizontal rungs hidden before Start?
This prevents the routes and outcomes from being read while entries are still being edited. Selecting Start fixes the assignment, reveals the rungs, and locks the fields.
Q. Is every vertical track actually connected?
Yes. Generation uses every adjacent boundary at least once, so every vertical track, including both outer tracks, has a horizontal connection. These rungs participate in the real route calculation rather than serving as decoration.
Q. Can several people receive the same outcome text?
Yes. Keep the participant and outcome field counts equal, then repeat the text in multiple outcome fields. Each field remains a distinct position, so every person receives one position while several people may see the same text.
Q. Does tracing one path change any unrevealed result?
No. Every assignment is fixed when Start is selected. Trace path and Reveal all only disclose that fixed assignment; neither action shuffles it again.
Q. How does a larger ladder work on mobile?
Ladders with two to four players fit the available width. For five to twelve players, swipe horizontally inside the ladder; when an animated route moves off-screen, the view automatically follows its current position.
